“Urutan Malaysia” Poised to Diversify Tourism Industry in Malaysia

Malaysia has done it once again – gaining international recognition as a popular tourist destination due to its cultural diversity. Many tourists are attracted by the unique art, architecture and cuisine that stem from Malaysia’s diverse cultures. However, due to rising competition, there is a need to diversify the tourism industry in Malaysia. Hence, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture (MOTAC) launched “Urutan Malaysia” in October 2017 to promote the local wellness traditions in Malaysia.

With the theme “Proudly Malaysian, Inspired Tradition,” Urutan Malaysia introduces modern, cross-culture spa and massage techniques that are inspired from traditional principles. It is hoped that Malaysia’s unique wellness heritage will become one of its biggest draws and serve as a unique attraction for tourists.

The idea behind Urutan Malaysia was a collaborative effort inspired by experts as well as practitioners in the spa industry. It took the development panel six years to combine the wellness practices of various ethnicities in Malaysia and modify them as a tourism attraction.

Urutan Malaysia captures the core wellness techniques behind Malaysia’s diverse cultures – namely Malay, Chinese, Indian, Peranakan, as well as the natives of Sabah and Sarawak – to forms a unique spa product that has never been experienced.

This final combination is said to be a Malaysian specialty as it reflects the culture and tradition of the local community that could only come from a multi-cultural country like Malaysia.

Since each Urutan Malaysia massage technique focuses on different aspects of the body, it is a complete top-to-toe care for the body, mind, and soul. It was designed to touch on the five senses – which are sight, smell, sound, taste and touch – through the use of batik decoration, aromatic herbs and spices, as well as therapy and healing music in the 90-minute massage session. These elements will provide a soothing and enjoyable experience for the customers while restoring their body.

The Ministry aspires to market Urutan Malaysia as a signature massage technique by making the service more accessible nationwide. Twenty experts were recruited to guide new therapists who may be interested to learn the technique, with the hopes that every massage therapist will know Urutan Malaysia in the next 20 years.

Urutan Malaysia was first introduced in London during the World Tourism Mart that was held from 6 to 8 November 2017. This event served as a platform for Malaysia to promote this new attraction to tourists across the globe, providing them with new experiences in Malaysia, besides its world-class attractions and food haven status. Urutan Malaysia will turn the country into a global spa and wellness hub for visitors from around the world.

Urutan Malaysia is available throughout a couple of spas within Malaysia namely Sembunyi SpaPuri Spa MelakaFrangipani Spa Langkawi and Paya Tropical Holistic Spa Tioman.

Ministry’s rating for the above spas can be found in this link.
